Dolpo Region
Dolpo is nestled in the remote north-western region of Nepal, between the majestic Tibetan Plateau and the Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. The upper Dolpo trek explores untouched and unspoiled villages, forests, gorges, and meadows of this region. Opened in the 1980s, the upper Dolpo trek route has remained a hidden gem that only a handful of travelers get to explore every year.
During the upper Dolpo trekking, you will explore the stunning Phoksundo Lake (3,600 m/11,811 ft) and come across a wide range of flora and fauna of Shey Phoksundo National Park. Likewise, this trek takes you to the homes of BonPon practitioners and visits ancient monasteries. You will get to see breathtaking trans-Himalayan landscapes along the trail, with phenomenal mountain views of Dhaulagiri (8,167 m/26,795 ft), Crystal Mountain (7,012 ft/2,137 m), etc.
The ancient monastery of Shey Gompa(4,343 m/14,249 ft) is also one of the main highlights of upper Dolpo trek in Nepal. As the trail is quite remote, you may not come across other travelers or villagers often while trekking. But the lucky ones may spot the rare snow leopard. The culture and lifestyles of the people residing in upper Dolpo hold immense anthropological interest, offering a window into a world that remains largely untouched by modern influences.
Although Dolpo is often characterized as a dry and arid region, its rugged terrain, fast-flowing rivers, cascading waterfalls, and rocky gorges offer an adventurous trekking experience. The upper Dolpo trek distance is around 230 kilometers (143 miles). The trail has a mix of rugged mountain paths, rocky terrain, steep ascents and descents, river crossings, and occasional sections of moraines.
